Passionate Journey

Author: Franz Masereel
Year: 1987, first published 1919
Country: England, first published Germany
Publisher: Penguin, first published by Kurt Wolff Verlag

This book was given to me in 1988 and carries an inscription by the giver – the words are heavy and distant. Poetry is absent. A gesture or not. I cherish this book and recall the awkward manner in which it was first presented to me and the way it passed from those hands to mine.

It is a commercially produced facsimile softcover edition of a graphic novel first published in 1919. A man’s life story is told through 165 evocative woodcuts. I have another facsimile hardcover edition of Passionate Journey produced in the 1960s, which I found at a market in Fortitude Valley in 2005.
